HAIR RESTORATION / HAIR TRANSPLANT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
HAIR TRANSPLANT QUESTIONS
AND ANSWERS
-
Q-What is hair
transplantation?
A-A
simple out patient procedure where a strip of hair is taken from the back
of the head, divided into small grafts, and moved to the
balding areas. The donor site is sutured creating an almost imperceptible
scar. The procedure lasts approximately 3 4 hours and is done with local
anesthesia and Twilight sedation. The procedure is relatively pain free
and discomfort is usually relieved by Tylenol.
2. Q In what types
of hair loss is transplantation helpful?
A
Male Pattern Baldness, Female Pattern Baldness, baldness resulting
from burns, accidents, operations, and some diseases of the scalp.
3. Q What types of hair
transplant surgery can Dr. Williams perform?
A
All types, since Dr. Williams is a Board Certified Facial Plastic
Surgeon. He can perform all types of hair restoration from follicular
units, micro and mini grafts,
1000+ graft mega sessions, to scalp reductions with
extenders,
3 step Juri tissue rotation
procedure, FLAP surgery and corrective surgery of
older grafts.
4. Q How long does it take
for transplanted hair to grow?
A
The transplanted shafts are usually shed within 4 weeks. New growth is
usually visible within 3-4 months and will grow approximately Ό to ½
inch per month.
5. Q What percentage of
hair transplants grow?
A
Virtually all transplants grow providing you follow proper
post operative instructions.
6. Q How much time is
required between sessions?
A
At least 4 to 6 months should be given between sessions.
This allows for all new grafts to be visible so new grafts are not
placed upon old grafts.
7. Q
Who is a good candidate?
A -
Almost every patient with pattern baldness is a good candidate if they
have realistic goals and expectations, as discussed with Dr.
Williams.
8. Q Is there an ideal
age to begin hair restoration surgery?
A
Hair transplantation can begin at any age providing goals
and expectations are realistic and agreed upon with Dr. Williams.
9. Q
How many sessions will I need?
A
This will be determined at your initial consultation, and
will be based upon realistic goals set up with Dr. Williams.
10.
Q How do I know if I have proper density and hair texture?
A
Hair density will be determined upon evaluation at the
initial consultation.
Regarding texture, here are some general rules:
§
Coarse hair usually produces a fuller
appearance
§
More sessions will be cosmetically
necessary if the hair is dark and the skin is light
§
Blonde and gray hair give better
cosmetic results and usually requires less sessions because hair tone is
closer to skin tone
§
Curly hair hives the impression of
greater volume than straight hair
11. Q What is the difference between fees per session
and price per graft?
A
If you transplant hair on price per graft you will most
likely wind up with see through hair and depletion of your donor area. We
at HairScripts structure our hair restoration fee based on a session. Sessions
optimize the use of donor hair and transplant hair over a larger
area using as many grafts as possible in an artistic placement. One graft
does not necessarily correspond to one hair. A large session involving
approximately 1,000 grafts may distribute 2,000 to 4,000 hairs. Those
grafts when distributed properly, will produce a natural hairline and the
desired density and coverage. We offer 4 sessions: Small (approximately
400 grafts), Medium (approximately 750 grafts), Large (approximately 1,000
grafts), and Mega (approximately 1,500 grafts).
12. Q Most importantly,
why should I choose New England Laser and Cosmetic Surgery Center?
A - First and
foremost, is Dr. Williams reputation and quality. When choosing a hair
transplantation surgeon, you should choose one with an artistic sense who
can create a natural hairline and normal head of hair. Secondly, we are
the only full care facility from Boston to New York City, Toronto to
Montreal. Full care means we offer pre operative care, operative care and
post operative care. Pre operative care means better care of the scalp and
hair through proper scalp cleansers and shampoos. Regarding post
operative care, we recommend that
you treat your hair so you dont lose more of the hair on top that
is genetically programmed to fall out. A treatment regime will be
discussed post operatively
with Dr. Williams and the HairScripts. We will also
monitor how your hair is doing on a monthly basis.
All other facilities are mostly transplant
centers and do not offer maintenance treatment. Without proper
treatment, more sessions may be necessary.
